A Sporran is basically a pouch to carry your stuff. Some are simple and some are very dressy. We suggest you match the type of Sporran to the level of formality of your event.
A Sporran made from all leather with a flap in the front is considered a Day-Wear Sporran. If the Sporran retains the flap but the front is fur it is considered a Semi-Dress or Semi-Formal Sporran. If the Sporran is all fur and has a half-round ‘Cantle’ (opening like a coin purse) it is considered a Formal Sporran. In between a Semi-Formal and a Formal are Hunter Sporrans. They have leather fronts but the formal Cantle opening.
You will also need a strap to hold your sporran on. The Chain strap has been the standard for years. Today however we reserve the chain strap for formal occasions. For everyday or day wear we advise going with a leather strap to save damage to your kilt from the chain and/or hooks.
